The Friends of The Yeatman Hospital had a stand at the Sherborne Castle Country Fair in May. A raffle we conducted during the day, with prizes donated by local businesses and individuals Several people wanted to buy tickets but did not want to win a prize so it suggested to them that they might like to donate the prize to a member of the Yeatman staff if they won. Lots of people liked this idea and probably about 50 tickets were sold on this basis . When the draw was made at the end of the day , by a random member of the public it wasn’t expected one of the staff tickets would win, let alone one the top three prizes, but it did!.
The Friends then had to agree with the Hospital how this prize; lunch for two , with wine , at the Clockspire, Milborne Port, was to be awarded. At a subsequent Trustees meeting, the Matron, Ali Low, informed them of a Health Care Assistant, Carol Wilson, who had worked for the NHS for 45 years with 40 of them being at the Yeatman. It was clear to the Trustees that the Raffle Prize should be awarded to Carol. The Chairman of the Friends, David Hayes, says ‘We consider this prize could not have gone to a more worthy person, given Carol’s devotion of service to the Hospital and the Community over such a long period of time’.
Carol Wilson was presented with the prize by David Hayes at a ceremony at the Hospital on July 14th. Afterwards Carol said ‘How much she had enjoyed, working at the Hospital and how she had seen many changes over the years. But she felt working there was like being in a family who were devoted to the care of their patients’.
